# PMG 2025 November meeting discussion of MATH1510

## Why I'm here

* I want to know if MATH1510 is fit for purpose.
* What topics do you need taught?
* How would you like assessment to be done?
* Challenges / opportuniteis of generative AI in MATH1510.

## MATH1510 role in programmes

* **BCompSci**, **BMathAdv**, **BDataSci** Core
* **BIT** *ICT Developer Major* Core
* **BEng** *Software Hons*
* **BSEng** *Hons* Core
* **BTeach** *Math Hons* and *Sci Hons* Core
* **BSci** Additional approved science course
* **BMath**, **BDevelopment**, **BEnvSciManagement**, ..., Suggested elective

## MATH1510 topics in 2025

* Logic
* Proof
* Naïve set theory
* Relations
* Modular arithmetic
* Graph theory
* Functions
* Recurrence relations
* Cardinality
* Enumeration (permutations and combinations)
* Probability (discrete)

## MATH1510 assessment in 2025

* Build and interpret truth tables.
* Prove elementary properties of a relation.
* Inversion of simple functions.
* Perform various algorithms by hand: Euclid, Kruskal, Prim, Solving recurrence relations.
* Calculate probabilities of discrete random variables and enumerations of finite sets, often from word problems.

## Generative AI

* Traditional modes of assessment outside examinations are insecure for this course.
* Can students be allowed to use genAI to solve problems?
* Will those completing this course will have access to genAI at all times in the future (including assessment for later courses) when they need to use the things they have learned?
 * If so, then can we let them use genAI in assessment in this course?
 * What are the things students need to be able to do without the help of genAI?
